AI scribe tool reaches 1,250 emergency department clinicians
Clinicians at Middlemore Hospital report better documentation and wellbeing, and more time for patient care, with Health New Zealand’s HealthX programme.
Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora’s HealthX programme was a finalist for the Te Tohu Auaha Hou | Innovation Award at this year’s Te Hāpai Hapori | Spirit of Service Awards.
Clinicians at Middlemore Hospital have reported better documentation and wellbeing, and more time to spend with patients, according to the Public Service Commission.
HealthX is Health New Zealand’s innovation programme. It finds, assesses and scales digital and AI tools led by clinicians. It began in September 2025.
AI scribe technology is now in emergency departments across New Zealand. It reaches 1,250 clinicians across 39 hospitals. HealthX projects also range from AI-assisted clinical documentation to remote patient monitoring.
The commission says HealthX shows how proven solutions can be scaled safely and effectively across the health system, through clinical leadership, governance and assurance.
The awards were held in Wellington on 1 October 2026. The Innovation Award winner was the yellow-legged hornet response by the Ministry for Primary Industries.
